A bevy of witches — or is it a coven?– came from seemingly nowhere on Saturday to sweep about the shores of Eastsound aboard a fleet of paddle boards, because what else is a good sea-going witch to do but adapt to the rules of social distancing during a pandemic.

Nearly 40 witches launched from Crescent Beach on Halloween to complete what has become a yearly, if somewhat secretive, jaunt around Madrona Point and back to Crescent Beach. The women gathered in response to a Facebook post from local massage therapist Arin Quies Wild. Participation this year saw the number of participants double from previous years.

Pandemic? These local witches don’t care
This is a horrible title and I feel like I can speak for all of the witches by saying “of course we care.”Did you interview anyone of us to think that we don’t care? It wasn’t a secret but merely planned within community of paddling enthusiasts.

Really Good.
It was amazing to see and everyone who caught a glimpse of this just loved it. I hope you do it again.
Witches Paddles have become a fun Halloween tradition in communities all over the country! Last year a few of us spontaneously joined in the annual nation-wide paddle and this year I posted publicly on Facebook for all Orcas women who love to paddle and dress up to join us, so this event being termed “secretive” was incorrect. Many women enjoyed a glorious day on the water in a safe way and anyone is welcome in the future! Maybe the author was just being playful and witchy in calling it secretive? Also misleading was the title of the article. Paddleboarding inevitably creates social distancing on the water, and many women wore masks, so to infer that we don’t care about the pandemic was very misleading and inaccurate. There were local teachers, a doctor, mothers, health care workers, and business owners participating who all care deeply about the health of our community. I’m so glad so many women and people who watched us from shore enjoyed the witches paddle so much! I know it brought a lot of joy to many in a time where joy and light heartedness are hard to come by. (As I write this, I’m literally still receiving messages of gratitude for the fun-filled paddle! :)
Awesome you witches are!
What a delightful example of having fun in our community, cherishing the natural world, exercise and safely Navigating a social event in the pandemic.
This needs a new title.
People are saying that the Coronavirus Narrative will disappear after the Election.
At least spell your community member’s names right, Lin.
These are women who care more about more things than most humans ever will.
Fabulous Witches they are.
