Orcas StoryFestcrop 2009xRobert Kikuchi-Yngojo and Nancy Wang of Eth-Noh-Tec again bring the art of storytelling to Orcas Island next week, with events scheduled every day, culminating in a performance of  The World of Stories at the Orcas Center on Saturday evening.

Islanders will be engaged in the stories of elders, funny and fanciful tales and horror stories at various venues throughout the week, with a special workshop featuring the founder of  the Bellingham Story Guild on Friday, Aug. 7.

Here’s the lineup!

Tues. Aug 4 — Wisdom, Wit  & Wily Ways: tales of trials and tribulation, of wise fools and foolish wisemen (or women!), of cautionary tales and “pour quoi?” stories that explain both mystery and wisdom of simple things. At the Senior Center at 1 p.m. (Free)

Wed. Aug 5 — Pajama Tales: come in your Jammies! Get cozy- bring the little ones (good for all ages, especially 5-8 year olds).  Fun stories, participation stories, songs and silliness drawn from the many cultures of the world. At the Library at 6:30 p.m. (Free)

Thurs. Aug 6, — Listening to the Heart of the World: Robert and Nancy have lead several cultural delegation of storytellers to rural and urban communities in Asia.  Come listen and see the images of these amazing interchanges between storytellers East and West presented in a powerpoint lecture. At the Library at 7 p.m. (Free)

Fri. Aug 7 — Telling from the Family Treasures: Storyteller Doug Banner will conduct a special workshop that invokes the stories within your memory prompted and inspired by the ordinary objects and extraordinary treasures of your family history.  Bring an old photo, a shoebox of knick-knack treasures, a piece of cloth or lace.  The stories are alive in them. Come and learn not only how to wake them up but also to breathe life into them as you become the storyteller. At the
Senior Center at 1 p.m. (Sliding Scale: $5-$25)

Ghost Stories!: hang on to your jaw, clutch your elbows, and steady your spine as the tellers tingle your nerves with horrifying, creepy crawling stories of the supernatural.  and tales of ghouls, ghosts, with sounds that go bump in the night.  Bring your flashlight and afterwards go home and sleep with the light on. At the Funhouse at 9 p.m.

Sat. Aug 8 — Ticklers and Tales: Bring your funny-bones, belly jigglers, and knee-slappers as the storytellers present their funny stories, folk tales, and more to the Stage on the Green, 12:30 p.m. (Free)

World of Stories: The final concert at the Orcas Center will present the fine art of storytelling as the artists spin their spells, weave their tales and conjure the magic of words and imagery through cultures of the world. From Four Directions come the stories:  myths and tales from Africa to Asia, Meso America to Europe—a world of stories will bring their listeners to home to the heart of being human.
