— from Francie Kisko —
Eight years ago, a father and his young son and daughter walked into my adult Beginning Latin Course. It was the Lister family: Ian, Ewan, and Flora. I was intending to use the Oxford Latin Course texts, which I thought might be a bit too advanced for the younger Listers, but if they were willing to try, I was willing to teach them.
The class was held year round, one day a week for two hours. Though Flora had to drop out of class due to other commitments, Ewan, only eleven at the time, settled right into the adult class and kept up academically with the adults, often even surpassing them. He learned and became especially adept at parsing and diagramming Latin sentences and scanning poetry. After the sudden death of his father, sixteen-year-old Ewan continued Latin classes on his own, which showed great maturity and tenacity.
Over the eight years, Ewan completed all the Latin grammar (including gerunds and gerundives!) in the Oxford series and has been reading excerpts from the original works of Cicero, Caesar, Livy, and the poets Catullus, Ovid, and Virgil. He spent last summer working on a long letter of Pliny the Younger.
All this study occurred over and above his regular school classes, plus community band concerts, part-time work, student government involvement, golf with the Orcas HS Golf Team, summer camps, and academic workshops. Throughout these many years, I have been very honored to have him as my Latin student; he has been a delight to me and to his fellow Latin students. The whole island community shouldbe very proud of him. He is a very academically gifted and talented young man. And now, our loss will be University of Washington’s gain.
Congratulations on your graduation from high school, Ewan. I and all the other Latin “Groupies” will miss you very much!

Thanks be for wondrous teachers and students such as these! May their lives continue to flourish!
If only all youths could be as motivated as Ewan. We adults who’ve crossed his path are lucky indeed.
Wow, eight years of Latin! I have 2 years under my belt and I thought that was….enough! I admire. It will be such a pleasure to watch this young man grow and become!
GREAT YOUNG MAN COMING FROM A GREAT SCHOOL TO A GREAT SCHOOLl!!! Go Ewan! Go Huskies!
Quod erat demonstrandum — classics education and Latin especially, is cool, and important!!! Good luck Ewan!
Ewan, how fortunate you have been to learn Latin. It will enrich your entire life in surprising ways. WAIT A MINUTE! Deus meus, EIGHT YEARS??? Ewan are you going to UW to teach Latin or to study it??? :-)
Cheers, well done, and Gratulor tibi de hac gloria!
It was my joy and privilege to have heard Ewan recite Horace, in toga garb, at Francie’s annual Roman celebration dinner in honor of the poet’s birthday. It is with awe that I learn here about the full depth of Ewan’s long study and achievements as a young Latin scholar. My own experience in Francie’s class was very enjoyable, but unlike for Ewan, the challenging demands of the homework were far too much for me. He should be awarded a triumph and crowned with laurels.
Thank you, Ewan, for including us fellow Latin students in your studies and investigations into this world of the Roman empires.
Very best wishes to you going forward
Ewan, carpe diem, baby!
What a delight to read this article about you, Ewan! I hold in such high esteem for so many things; it seems I learn more about you and your extraordinary family all the time. The conversations we have had from when you were in 3rd grade onward have affected me deeply and in a positive way.
I wish you the best in everything and will be following along as you make your way in life as the Renaissance Man you are. Congratulations!
Is this Latin class still occurring? I had two years in 1962-1964, but often wish I had continued.
So lovely to read about these self-motivated kids and their wonderful teachers! Congratulations, Ewan!
Congratulations Ewan on following your gift of intelligence, dedication, discipline and passion. You set a high standard in life, scholarship, and integrity. I’m excited for your future, and to read a piece of your Latin brilliant career.
Francie is the best, and deserves to have you as her premiere student, to compensate for her kindness to many lesser minds such as mine.
