Chef Madden in 2013 teaching our K-6 Farm to Classroom students how to make gnocchi.

— by Ashley Randall, Farm to Cafeteria Coordinator —

The Farm to Cafeteria Program is excited to announce our second Celebrity Chef event of the school year! Chef Madden Surbaugh, assistant general manager and deli manager of the Orcas Food Co-op,will be preparing lunch at Orcas Island Public Schools Cafeteria on Wednesday, March 16 for students and the public.

In 2013, Madden worked alongside our spectacular cafeteria staff to serve 352 lunches. Three years and one new cafeteria later, we are bringing Madden back to the public school and challenging him to break his previous record! If your taste buds never had the chance to enjoy the delectable dinners served at his former restaurants, Steps Wine Bar & Café and The Quilted Pig, you must come and eat lunch with us to experience his culinary creativity.

On the menu will be Hungarian pork, made with meat from Jones Family Farm, späetzles (a type of tasty egg noodle dumpling), pickled cabbage, and home-style chocolate bread pudding. Adults can enjoy this delicious Hungarian-inspired meal, a trip to the salad bar and a beverage for just $6. Parents are encouraged to eat with their kids and the community is invited to come for lunch between 12:10 and 12:40 p.m.

In addition to a day in the cafeteria, Chef Madden will spend the following Thursday and Friday teaching Mandy Randolph’s K-6 Farm to Classroom students culinary techniques.

If you are interested in volunteering to help make this event a success, please contact Ashley Randall at arandall@orcas.k12.wa.us

We look forward to seeing you in the cafeteria on March 16!
