The Orcas Island High School Chess Team are the State 2B Champions.  48 teams from all size categories qualified and competed together at the 59th annual Washington State High School Chess Team Championships, held February 28 and March 1 at Lincoln Hill High School in Stanwood.  Six rounds were played over two days.  Of the 48 teams that made it through the qualification process to compete at State, five of those were 2B teams, and OIHS performed the best out of them all, scoring 15.5 wins.  The format was 5 versus 5 matches, scoring by individual wins.

Team members are:
Lamai Hons, 10th grade
Max Dickey-Vollmer, 10th grade
Orion “Arrow” Johns, 10th grade
Colter Bond, 11th grade
Thurmond Russel, 11th grade

Orcas Island HS round by round:

1. West Valley HS (Yakima), 1 win
2. Eatonville HS, 3.5 wins
3. Thomas Jefferson High School (Auburn), 3 wins
4. Seton Catholic Preparatory School (Vancouver), 2.5 wins
5. Bellevue International School, 4 wins
6. Edmonds-Woodway HS, 1.5 wins
