— from Jared Lovejoy for the Orcas Island Film Festival —
The Orcas Island Film Festival is proud to present “Miss Representation,” the award winning documentary film directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom and provided by the Representation Project whose mission is to use film and media as catalysts for cultural transformation.
This is the second film of a two-part series and the kick-off of a monthly film series leading
up to the festival and is co-sponsored by the Orcas LGBT Fund.
Last fall the Orcas Island Film Festival presented the companion film, “The Mask You Live In,” which followed boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. This film was widely received by an audience that was hungry for this powerful content and the discussions that followed.
“Miss Representation” explores the ways the media is selling young people the idea that girls’ and women’s value lies in their youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in their potential and capacity as leaders. Miss Representation features an impressive array of voices, from Katie Couric and Rachel Maddow, to Margaret Cho, Gloria Steinem and Dianne Feinstein. Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom, an advocate, thought leader and CEO of the non-profit social action organization MissRepresentation.org, made this documentary to inspire and motivate us all to be agents of change in our culture.
Miss Representation will show at the Sea View Theatre on Thursday, May 11th at 7:30pm with doors opening at 6:30pm. Join us for a conversation in the lounge after the film. Admission by donation, $10 suggested donation. Watch the preview here: https://vimeo.com/28122207
