Following a three-year hiatus during the pandemic, the Orcas Island Cider & Mead Festival returned to the Village Green in Eastsound on July 15. Over 300 cider and mead fans turned out to support Orcas Senior Center (OSC) in reviving this much-loved event.
A fundraiser for Saturday’s event was the center’s first effort in this arena. Under new management, OSC is raising funds to continue and expand its community and social service work. The senior center is a private nonprofit and does not receive local tax dollars.
“We are glad to see the festival return to Orcas and truly appreciate the support and encouragement the community has given Orcas Senor Center in this effort. The new OSC is working to engage and serve a broader spectrum of folks on Orcas with active, fun events and services,” said Lynnette Wood, OSC Acting Executive Director.
The festival featured cider and mead made by 13 producers from around the Pacific Northwest. Patrons tasted a large variety of different beverages and were able to purchase their favorites to take home.
Held alongside the Saturday Farmers Market, four bands provided music and entertainment for the festive event. OSC thanks the scores of volunteers who helped make the festival a success, especially Paula Shuman who spearheaded and organized the event.
