As stories of the world’s imminent demise via climate change or some combination of societal disruptions increasingly dominate conversations, the news, and social media channels, numerous government agencies have been busy scenario-building. One focus of attention is on preparation “at scale” – how to equip communities to withstand whatever nature (and various elements of the unhinged) throw at them. To that end, the Department of Defense, FEMA, DAPA, and other military-industrial overlords have been selecting specific, relatively isolated regions around the world as prototypes for this kind of planning. And Orcas Island landed on their list!

What does this mean? Well, reliable information is difficult to come by given the secretive and still experimental nature of these efforts, but several initiatives have leaked to this reporter: underground storage facilities; enhanced technology at the Port to accommodate resource transport and various military craft (and the occasional billionaire-celebrity jet); commandeering key shorelines for surveillance; genetic manipulation of local agriculture to accelerate growing cycles; new educational and self-defense programs for both kids and adults.

Some of these efforts are already underway, but NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) are a staple of these activities, so no one is talking. An anonymous source (code name “The Manchurian”) did confirm, however, that a number of inquiries have already been made to local officials, and systems are being set up to coordinate and finance this island-wide transformation. “This won’t happen overnight,” said the source. “There are a lot of moving parts.”

One question that’s been raised is why Orcas residents have not had a say in what seems like a unilateral and irrevocable decision to reshape our future. Keep a close eye on this year’s election campaigns for clues of what’s in store . . . or already in storage.
