The ballots arriving in Orcas Islanders’ mailboxes this week ask voters to select one candidate among the three who have filed for Fire District Commissioner #2. This is the only race on the ballot, in order to narrow the field in the General Election in November to the top two candidates. Duff Andrews, Clyde Duke, and Jonathan Loop have all officially filed for the position on the ballot.
The primary ballot instructs voters to select one person. “More than one vote for an office will be an overvote and no votes for that office [on that particular ballot] will be counted.”.
Doris Schaller, County Elections Supervisor said, “On July 29, the San Juan County Elections Office mailed ballots for the August 18, 2009 Primary Election. With just one race—for the San Juan Island Fire Protection District #2 Commissioner 2 position—on the ballot, the ballots were mailed only to voters within the Fire District on Orcas Island.
“Voters returning their ballots by mail must have them postmarked by Election Day. Voters may also deposit their ballots at the ballot drop box located at the Orcas Island Senior Center, or may bring their ballots to the elections office in Friday Harbor by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Because the only item on the ballot pertains only to Orcas voters, ballot boxes on Lopez and on San Juan Island will not be open for this election.”
Interviews with the three Orcas Fire District Commissioner candidates will be posted on Orcas Issues this week.

The ballot is not clear to us. Are we to vote for one of the three or two of the three?
