— from Sara Pelfrey for Orcas Door to Door —
Holidays can be a lonely time, especially when you don’t have a way to hop in the car and join in the holiday cheer. Orcas Door to Door, a Lahari Aging on Orcas Program, recognizes this and is offering rides to their members to holiday events this December. Volunteer drivers will be taking members to the Eastsound Christmas Tree Lighting and the Artesian Fair at Odd Fellows Hall.
Members use the service mainly for errands and appointments, however, the program is encouraging them to use the service to stay connected to the greater community. This includes the major island celebrations, like the Christmas Tree Lighting, to smaller events at places like the Orcas Center. Door to Door is in the testing phase for its service to be used for events and is optimistic about what it can mean for its members and the community.
Orcas Door to Door is an assistive transportation program with the mission to support homebound elders, and people with disabilities, access vital transportation on the island with the idea of supporting people staying in their homes as they age. For more information on how to sign up for a membership or become a volunteer driver contact us at 360-622-2929 or visit www.orcasdoortodoor.org.
