— from Orcas Community Resource Center Board of Directors and Staff —
As we all continue to deal with the economic, social, and health
consequences of the novel coronavirus pandemic in our community, we are
also coming face-to-face with the tremendous harm caused by racial
discrimination in the United States. The events occurring around the nation
in recent weeks weigh heavily on each of us. Individually, we must examine
our own roles in perpetuating this system of oppression within our society,
even if indirectly and unintentionally.
OCRC reiterates its unwavering, loving stance in support of justice for all
within our society. We reject all actions that perpetuate inequality, hatred,
and violence.
We support the Black Lives Matter movement and its efforts to dismantle
the pervasive racist systems of oppression in our country and in our
communities. We dedicate ourselves to fostering an examination of the role
of White privilege in our lives and in our community. As we engage in this
work, we humbly acknowledge the Coast Salish People who are the
traditional stewards of this land. We commit ourselves to work to bring
equal access to all forms of well-being wherever we see injustice. At this
critical juncture in our country’s history, we will strive to partner with other island organizations to help provide anti-racism education and training for ourselves and the community.
We are grateful for the wonderful people of Orcas. And we rededicate
ourselves and our organization to serve all who need assistance.
