Orcas Christian class takes flight in hands-on aeronautics lesson

Recently, Ms. Angie Millen’s class at Orcas Christian School (OCS) embarked on an extraordinary learning adventure as part of their aeronautics unit. The students were given a unique opportunity to take a flight around the islands, transforming their classroom lessons into a real-world experience.

“Each student was able to take the controls, fly the plane, and listen to other island traffic on their headsets,” explained Ms. Millan. This hands-on experience gave the students firsthand knowledge of aviation, communication, and navigation far beyond what textbooks alone can offer.

One particularly memorable moment came during a near-zero-gravity maneuver. “One of my students was so inspired by the sensation that he now wants to be a stunt pilot and work in Hollywood!” Ms. Millen said.

This amazing experience didn’t just teach the students about flying—it also inspired them to dream bigger and try new things. Moments like these show how hands-on learning can spark curiosity and encourage students to follow their goals. It’s a great reminder that learning can go far beyond the classroom.
