— from San Juan County Sheriff’s Office —
Here’s a video blip taken Saturday, Jun. 3 by an islander and sent to Orcas Issues via San Juan County Sheriff’s Office of the Orcas Island black bear.
The Sheriff’s Office further advises that State Department of Fish & Wildlife will return to the island tomorrow, Sunday, to attempt a capture so the bear can be moved to a safer environment.

Thanks for sharing this great video! Approximately where on the Island is this? We’re wanting to track Yogi’s adventures.. May his Orcas Island excursion end well.

Great to see update, thank you. All memorable events and their characters deserve a true and colorful telling for posterity and names are key to a good story so I vote for Lawrence as a name. since as I understand, he was seen first at Pt. Lawrence. I wish him well and good luck to those seeking to escort him safely and expediently to his off island future. Maybe we could have a naming contest so we all tell about him as we do ‘Higgy’, the kodiak brown bear of 1910 fame. And perhaps we will see a nice portrait of our black bear on the Brown Bear Bakery’s wall to commemorate this bit of island history!
I hope Fish & Wildlife will do their research and return the bear to his “home”. Sad to see him go, as he just bearly got here.
I hope Fish and Wildlife Do tranquilize and remove the Bear for its’ sake. Some years ago they said they would “Relocate” a herd of Deer who roamed the Airport runway. Instead, they killed them all!
Bear embodies “Introspection”. When one comes calling it is usually time to contemplate the direction of your life. I would say, that this Messenger is showing us that it is a “going within” time to seek answers that are needed for all islanders. It reminds me that taking the habitat of wildlife is self-indulgent and self-centered and is Not the Way of the True Human Being!
Due to the wording in this article some people think the bear has been captured (contained) instead of your real meaning… captured on video. I guess some people didn’t read the whole article. I’m still seeing posts about bear sightings and photos.
