Dear Graduates,

Congratulations on earning your Highschool diplomas!  Along the way you have learned facts, gained skills and given service to your community.  Please continue to do all these things. I sat in the audience yesterday at the Celebration of Excellence and watched you be recognized for the things you have done.  You also received a lot of very concrete support for what you seek to do in the future.  I could see pride and gratitude in your faces.  Both are warranted.  It is a good thing to be grateful to those who help you realize your dreams and it is imperative to say “thank you”. Some of you faced significant challenges. In the end, though, even if you were lucky enough to have every bit of support anyone could give you, you had to make the many decisions about discipline and direction that got you where you are today.  You get that credit and I hope you will recognize your achievement.

I wish you all success, love, and fulfilling work.  I hope you will never wait for someone else to do the right thing or the thing that needs doing.  I know you grew up in a place where community is valued and your own contributions make an impact everyone can feel and see.  Remember that.  Personal contributions to community can feel unimportant in a world of 8 billion people.  The truth is, if you are in a position to make a positive difference in even a small way, you need to do that if you want things to roll in the right way.  As you prepare to take your places sailing the boat we are all in together, I wish you fair winds and following seas!
