||| FROM BEN LUNA for ORCAS ISLAND FIRE & RESCUE |||
In the afternoon of Sunday, July 20 Orcas Fire and Rescue responded to an initial wildland fire happening off Point Lawrence Road in Doe Bay. This fire, which has been fully extinguished, was likely caused from an unattended campfire.
Approximately three minutes after the fire call was made in Doe Bay, a second wildland fire of approximately 3/4 acre was reported off Palisades Road in Rosario. DNR was put on standby to assist with air support. After the fire crews made an initial attack, it was decided that air resources were not necessary for the containment. The crews were able to contain the Palisades fire within one hour of scene arrival.
OIFR will continue to monitor the site over the next several days. WA DNR will send one engine Monday to check on both fires. The cause has not been determined for the Palisades fire.
Captain George Schermerhorn with OIFR was first on scene. He stated, “We found a running grass and moss fire considerably larger than the 80×80 size from the first report. Crews got lines on the ground quickly and contained it to the area. The initial attack proceeded rapidly and then we moved crews into mop up and digging fire lines.”
OIFR wishes to extend appreciation to property owners and drivers on Palisades Road during the fire for their patience with limited access. All roads are now fully open.
During the two wildland fires, OIFR was also called to three unrelated medical calls. EMS crews were able to handle all three calls, including one airlift evacuation.
Effective Monday July 21, Fire Danger levels will increase to VERY HIGH and all outdoor campfires including charcoal are prohibited. Propane and pellet grills are ok. Caution with outdoor mowing.
