An airplane traveling a few miles away from Orcas Airport made an emergency landing Wednesday evening. The landing resulted in the airplane flipping over as it hit a fence in a field. OIFR first responders were enroute within 15 seconds of being dispatched, with 11 OIFR members responding to the incident.
Through a combination of skill and teamwork, one patient was flown to St. Joseph’s in Bellingham for further care using a nearby site deemed suitable as a landing zone. Crews were on scene within minutes of the 911 call and remained until incident command determined the situation was stable for handing over to law enforcement.
The call came in just as the on-duty crew at the Eastsound station had finished assessing, treating, and coordinating care for a walk-in patient. The duty crew, other staff, and volunteers across the island heard “stand by for page” from dispatch and were ready for the second call.
Two calls active at the same time are common on Orcas Island, where we have approximately 1200 calls per year, with around 20% of them happening as concurrent calls. This is commonly referred to as a “double tap.”
To volunteer and career staff, it was clear from the dispatch details that this call warranted a significant response. Witnesses saw responders jump into action, coordinate, and move out within seconds.
First Responder Lieutenant Tony Simpson was one of the first on scene. “As an aviator for 35 years and a volunteer in this department,” he says, “it’s great to see how we respond quickly and in large numbers when this kind of thing happens.”
A plane crash is a time-critical event, both from a medical and a fire suppression perspective. While enroute to the incident, fire department officers were coordinating resources to ensure that we would be able to adequately provide both emergency medical care (based on the significant mechanism of injury reported), as well as be prepared for the ignition of a wildland fire based on the likelihood of fuel spills in these events, combined with current dry environmental conditions.
Crews responded from Eastsound with an ambulance and two fire engines. Our backup paramedic, Chief vanSchaick, and additional crews responded with her Advanced Life Support (ALS) fly car and a fire engine from Deer Harbor. The West Sound fire station volunteers brought the Station 22 water tender to the scene in case there was a fire, and a large amount of water was needed. Volunteer Officer Lt. McCorison was first on scene, navigating the complex access through fences and gates into the field where the plane was located.
Due to the quick arrival of Lt. McCorison, incoming units were advised of the status of both the airplane (and its fluids) as well as the condition of its occupants. Volunteer EMTs arrived and worked with the Chief/Paramedic vanSchaick to provide immediate ALS-level patient care. A landing zone was identified and set up for rotor resources to land nearby. Patient care was transferred to ALNW for transport to an emergency department.
Fortunately, this time there was no additional fire or hazardous material involvement, but OIFR had brought the resources to the scene necessary should any such situation have arisen.
The quick response of capable volunteers and our skilled duty crew at OIFR took this serious incident from chaos to order in minutes. OIFR thanks bystanders for their assistance at the scene and is grateful for our members who showed up and did their jobs with proficiency, competence, and, most of all, teamwork.

You might think there is a vote going on that will effect the Orcas Island Fire Department. From someone who spent 15 years on the department.
Instead of a “Rah Rah Rah Aren’t We Great” article, a bit of real news would be useful. Names of the plane occupants, type of plane, origin of the flight, destination, reason for the emergency landing, actual location of the landing, severity of injuries, were the NTSB and FAA notified – These all seem to me to more important and more newsworthy then what other activities of the FD had going on when the report call in.
It’s a federal law that the NTSB must be notified and MUST review the accident before anything can be touched at an airplane accident site beyond what is required to attend to the injured. Why hasn’t this incident shown up in either the NTSB of the FAA accident report logs?

Jack, honest comment.. it’s unfortunate that when I read this article I sensed what John’s comment reflected. Poor timing.. Of course all appreciate the presence of OIFR. With Humility, we are grateful OIFR wasn’t taxed with a Broader more horrific incident..
My sincere hope is this Institution can keep up there duty as prescribed, get better Direction from a cohesive Commission and become the A team..
The scene witnessed at Orcas Fire would seem, individuals trying to do the right thing, but it’s reflecting absence of leadership.. hence the fragmentation of commentary.
I do not fault anyone for trying to shed light, but there’s a disconnect of professionalism.. True leadership rings with a common Voice of Authority, not but amplification but Clarity and Vision. The Still Small Voice of Reason…
I thank each individual in OIFR for their efforts and am looking forward to a Commission that gives the OIFR Team Clear, Progressive Direction with Great Governance.. not micro managing Administrative Duties, but Guidelines of Excellence.

I appreciate OIFR and all those people who put in the time and effort to make it work. I wish the current internal strife that shows up in the local news wasn’t happening. And I don’t have any insights into how to make things right.
But the original article as written is not “news”. Its written more like a “letter to the editor”. The basic journalistic requirement for news is to answer the questions; Who, What, When, Where and How. I learned that 40 years ago in college in Journalism 101. That requirement still exists even if the medium of delivery has changed. All the required points for “news” are either missing or incomplete in the article.
I’d really like to know what actually happened. And, if the airplane accident was Wednesday, July 26th, why wasn’t it included in the latest Sheriff’s Report?

Lin, the Sheriff’s Report published here covers July 19 through 26. The accident was supposed to be Wednesday, July 26th. Is someone using a different calendar ?
