— from John Ahrens —
Orcas Island Fire & Rescue is excited to host a Responder Academy starting January 10, 2017. The academy is designed for interested members of the community to explore the various aspects of emergency response, helping others and becoming involved with their Fire Department. Upon completion of the nine-session course, new members will have the basic knowledge to assist on calls and prepare for the next available Fire/Emergency Medical Technician Academy.
The Responder Academy will cover various topics such as Health Care Provider CPR/First-Aid, team building, along with basic Rescue, Firefighting and Emergency Medical Services.
Our goal with the Responder Academy is to integrate members of the community into a vastly expanding world of Emergency Services. Here on Orcas Island we truly are “neighbors helping neighbors.”
Simultaneously, we have an Emergency Medical Technician Course which current and dedicated members will be working with San Juan Island EMS from January 4 – May 6, 2017 to become Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technicians.
“What our current responders do at Orcas Island Fire and Rescue is amazing,” states Volunteer Coordinator John Ahrens. “I feel extremely proud that when the emergency occurs, day or night, rain or shine, the volunteer members of our department jump out of bed willing to do whatever they can to help.”
Contact Orcas Fire & Rescue at 376-2331 if interested in joining the academy.
