“Chocolate mousse,” she says with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. If you know Debbie Liblik, you know she loves three things: chocolate, her family, and teaching her students at Orcas Christian School (OCS). Whether it’s teaching students to pipe their cupcakes (I know, I was in disbelief, too, until she sent me a picture of my five-year-old doing it) or giving hugs to kids who need them, “Ms. Debbie,” as she’s known, is a shining example of the wonderful teachers who make this community so special.

Debbie Liblik

Liblik has been involved in education for the past 30 years. She has spent the last seven years at Orcas Christian School, including five as a primary teacher. She loves the grade level she teaches.

“Teaching children is my life’s joy. It fills my bucket,” Debbie says proudly. She pours her heart into everything she does, including owning, managing, and operating the only fitness center on Orcas Island.

Liblik says she loves three things about Orcas Island: “the close-knit community, the beautiful scenery, and the great hiking.”

At Orcas Christian School, the TK/K students are “egg-cited” about the 11 fertilized eggs they are incubating. Six-year-old Piper says, “We are making books shaped like eggs! My favorite part is writing in my book. On the first page, there’s a day, and there are three spaces you can write in. On day one, you write that ‘the head, the brain, and the eyes started to form.’” She immediately added, “There are 11 days left until they hatch!” Piper predicts that three of the 11 eggs will successfully hatch.

As these young children grow, Liblik advises those searching for a life’s calling: “If you like to connect, make a difference, and teach strategies, then teaching may be the thing for you.”
