The National Theatre production Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches, broadcast live on July 20 and Part Two: Perestroika, broadcast live on July 27 to Orcas Center at 7:30 pm. Angels in America is a unique two-night event, broadcast live in two parts, each one week apart. The two parts are two halves of the same story, so audiences need to see both parts to fully experience the show and see the whole story. Angels in America is sold out in London and the only way to get tickets is via a Ballot. Tens of thousands of people have entered this Ballot, for a limited number of available tickets. For many, the only way to see the show will therefore by via the NT Live broadcast.
Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, by Tony Kushner, depicts America in the mid-1980s in the midst of the AIDS crisis during a conservative Reagan administration where New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell. This incredible epic drama offers a critique of American conservative politics which resonates particularly now. Social activists, liberal thinkers, and LGBT audiences will appreciate this theatrical epic. Although the subject matter is serious, the writing is fantastically funny and the performances are brilliantly entertaining.
The incredible star cast includes: Oscar-Nominee Andrew Garfield who leads the cast is famous for his role in Spiderman and recently appeared in Silence and Hacksaw Ridge. Angels In America is “An exhilarating long day’s journey into flight,” said the Sunday Times. “Andrew Garfield is spectacular.” Cast member Russell Tovey is a well-known British film and TV face most recently in The Pass, Nathan Lane is a Broadway superstar known for The Producers and James McArdle starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Denise Gough currently stars in the BBC’s Paula, and is well-known to theatre fans as the winner of the 2016 Olivier Award for Best Actress for People, Places and Things. This new staging of Kushner’s multi-award winning two-part play is directed by Olivier and Tony award winning director Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and War Horse). “A blistering production,” raves Whats On Stage. “The entire cast are superb.”
