NOTICE OF A SAN JUAN COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING TO
RECEIVE TESTIMONY ON THE 2021 ANNUAL DOCKET OF PROPOSED TEXT
AMENDMENTS TO THE SAN JUAN COUNTY COMPREHENSIVE PLAN AND UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT CODE
The San Juan County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing to receive testimony on the 2021 Annual Docket (San Juan County Code 18.90.020). The Annual Docket is the process through which members of the community request changes to the County’s Comprehensive Plan and Unified Development Code. After the public hearing, the Planning Commission will recommend to the County Council whether the proposed docket items should be placed on the Department of Community Development’s (DCD) future work program.
The hearing will be held virtually and begin at or after 9 a.m. Friday, June 18, 2021. Information for joining the hearing is available HERE. Interested parties are encouraged to submit written or oral comments regarding the staff recommendation.
A staff report dated May 6, 2021 can be found HERE. The staff report includes copies of the 2021 requests. Interested parties may request a copy by contacting Sophia Cassam at sophiac@sanjuanco.com.
How to Comment: The official comment period is Wednesday, June 2, 2021 through Friday, June 18, 2021, unless the Planning Commission extends the comment period. Written comments about particular docket requests should refer to the project number given for the request in the staff report (i.e. 21-0001). Written comments submitted prior to 12:00 p.m. on June 17 will be forwarded to the Planning Commission members and published online. If requested in your written submittal, staff will read your written comments into the record.

Docket 21-0003 requests a “truth in planning” statement regarding the potential buildout population in San Juan County. Please read the material at http://doebay.net/bigpicture.pdf to discover the importance of this docket request and to write a comment in support of this request. The estimated buildout population (based on county tax parcel data and GDLI data) is over 130,000 people: this number does not include visitors or the approximately 10% ADU bump. SJC’s population today is about 16,000. DCD and Council have consistently refused to do this work to confirm what the population is, how it conforms (or not) to the Vision Statement, and whether the county’s carrying capacity could provide for that population. Let the Planning Commission know that you care! Can you imagine even a doubling of population here, much less 130k? Shouldn’t residents know what is baked in to the density map?
