— from Eric Webb, Orcas Schools Superintendent —
Due to inclement weather and unsafe road conditions, all OISD schools locate on Orcas Island will be closed Wednesday, February 13 and all school events are cancelled.
Crews have been working nonstop to clear the roads, and their efforts are greatly appreciated. Overall road conditions are categorized as dangerous by San Juan County. Priority 1 roads have been plowed and sanded, but some compact snow and ice remains. Priority 2 roads have been plowed, although they have compact snow and ice. Priority 3 roads will be worked on tomorrow. Crews will be out this evening on Priority 1 and 2 roads.
At the school, we are able to bring in a show plow and start clearing the road and parking lots. Maintenance and custodians have been clearing doorways and paths from one building to the next.
On a positive note, Governor Inslee issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency for the past week. State Superintendent Reykdal is accepting applications to have the missed days waived.
Stay safe and enjoy the snow for another day.
