The Wilderness Law is under attack, and the people attacking it are counting on you not knowing what you stand to lose.

The Wilderness Act of 1964 created the National Wilderness Preservation System. It established a category of federal land protection stronger than any other in American law.

A wilderness area starts as a proposal. Congress passes a bill. The president signs it. The land becomes wilderness. From that day forward, the rules apply.

Wilderness is the headwaters of most of the major rivers in the West. It’s the last secure habitat for grizzly bears, wolverines, lynx, fisher, sage grouse. It’s where the Pacific Crest Trail spends much of its 2,650 miles. It’s where the Continental Divide Trail runs. It’s why your tap water is clean if you live in a Western city.

The Trump administration is rescinding the Roadless Rule, which protected 58.5 million acres of inventoried roadless areas in national forests.
