A team of scientists captured a new orca whale calf alongside its mother in a stunning drone video, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries.

The footage was captured on Sept. 15 in the Haro Strait area west of San Juan Island by a joint science team including SeaDoc Society, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, and NOAA Fisheries.

The researchers filmed the whales with a permit. Under a Washington state house bill, unmanned aerial systems, or drones, are prohibited from approaching the Southern Resident orca whales that travel local waters.

There are many guidelines from NOAA to keep whales safe, including moving parallel with the animals and keeping distant to avoid disturbances.
