Memorial: Monday, November 21, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m., Orcas Senior Center
— from Daniel Harris —
Megan Harris passed in her sleep on October 9 at the young age of 93 surrounded by family and friends. She was her fiercely independent and humorous self until her final breath, tenaciously living life as she has always done – on her own terms.
A devoted dinghy sailor, Megan skipped high school to catch the wind when the conditions were right and sail off into the Atlantic. A divorcee and single mother in the 1940s, she changed her first name and married Bob (Robert Wilson Harris) and they had two more children together. Megan and Bob were adventurous travelers who were comfortable pulling their camper van up to a farmer’s field in the outer reaches of Turkey to ask to camp in their olive orchard – then more often than not – ended up sharing a meal with the family. Her adventures on Rhea Cybele, the 1901 Cornish fishing boat they rebuilt on a dock in Spain, were endless, and they sailed her for several years. No matter where their adventurous life took them, Megan always produced fabulous meals for her family and anyone else who dropped by – cooking was her passion. Mostly healthy food, but there was always ice cream in the freezer and sherry in the pantry.
Megan was a wife, partner, mom, grandmother, homemaker, potter, artist’s model, vegetable gardener, adventurer, friend to many, volunteer and more. She is survived by husband Bob, sons David and Daniel and grandsons Iain and Michael. Megan joins her eldest son Kirby in the afterlife. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 21st, 3pm to 5pm at the senior center on Orcas.
Megan, we will miss seeing you around town dressed in colorful Mexican ethnic clothes. Give Kirby a hug from us.
