||| FROM ORCAS ISLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT |||
Growing up, Dave Mowrey loved school and knew he wanted to live on an island. In high school, he worked on the stage crew, doing three plays a year and countless assemblies. He had a great time.
About his favorite teacher, Mr. Gross was my 6th grade teacher; he rewarded our class with different card games in the afternoon.
Dave finally landed on Orcas in 1982. As well, he has been an Orcas Firefighter and EMT for 30 years.
Dave shared some lessons from his work life: “Team work really does exist. And, when it is working well, miracles can happen.
Speaking of miracles…while working at Camp Orkila, a huge mistake had been made — the camp was double booked. “With only a few hours before new guests were to arrive, we had no staff to clean and get ready for the next group. We had every spare person, from the YMCA CEO to the Orkila Camp Secretary pitching on. In fact, I scrubbed toilets with the CEO that day! The kids and guests never had a clue anything was wrong. We got the job done!”
When asked if he could do anything right now, and what would that be. he replied: “I am doing it: being semi-retired and being a bus driver.”
In his spare time he loves to read and bake bread.
Dave’s favorite ice cream is vanilla.
