Kari McVeigh has announced her candidacy for the open seat on the San Juan County Council District 1.
McVeigh, current Superintendent for the Shaw Island School District and former Superintendent for the San Juan Island School District, is running for the County Council to help build consensus on the future of our San Juan Islands community.
“My goal as a Councilmember is to listen to the community as we work together to address the important issues we are facing – affordable housing, community health improvement, and stewardship of our natural resources through balanced and sustainable budgets, ” McVeigh said. “Continuing to work closely with our legislators in Olympia will be key to our success in transportation, economic development, and educational improvement.” McVeigh is seeking a new challenge in helping to create a more resilient and more equitable community through effective governance.
McVeigh has had a successful career as an administrator in public education settings from the East Coast to the West Coast. Skilled in instructional leadership, management/administration, communications, and finance & budget processes, she is a nationally-recognized educational leader and leadership coach for public school administrators and non-profits.
Active locally in community service, McVeigh has been a member of Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor, served on the San Juan Island Public Schools Foundation as a Board member and Treasurer, was a member of the San Juan Island Fire and Rescue Logistics team, volunteered for the Joyce L Sobel Family Resource Center, and is currently a Board member of the League of Women Voters of the San Juans.

I have spoken with Kari, and she will make an excellent County Councilor.
