— from Sheriff Rob Nou —
On Thursday, January 9, 2014 at about 8:30 a.m. deputies were sent to the Island Market in Eastsound on a report that a vehicle had struck the building.
A 2009 BMW SUV operated by a 47-year-old South Lake Tahoe, CA woman had struck the building twice.
The operator told deputies that the vehicle had suddenly accelerated as she attempted to park in front of the store. After initial impact, the driver shifted into reverse and the car lurched back toward a parked car. She shifted back into drive and the vehicle hit the building a second time-—this time with sufficient force to deploy the airbags.
The vehicle did not penetrate the exterior wall of the building, but did considerable damage to both the building and the vehicle. The operator suffered minor injuries, and was treated and released by EMS at the scene. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
No citations were issued.
