The children of Life Church, Orcas Campus, recently completed a service project by walking to Island Market and greeting people. They explained that their “Change for Change” Samaritan’s Purse project was collecting money to help families who lost their homes in the Oklahoma tornado that damaged 1,200 homes.
These children, ages 6 to 12, have previously held other fundraisers for Samaritan’s Purse and World Concern. In the last two years, they have sold baked goods and donated flea market items for Christmas shoe boxes; as well as providing chickens and goats for families in desperately poor countries and money that contributed to wells for clean water in villages.
Samaritan’s Purse has a long history in the U.S. of providing relief by sending in volunteers to areas devastated by natural disasters. They have been working for several months to help clean up the rubble of broken homes in Oklahoma. They tackled damaged roofs by clearing the debris and covering roofs with tarps to prevent further damage. Now they are in the process of actual rebuilding. These children from Orcas Island raised almost $100 dollars by asking for “Change for Change.” Many thanks to those in our community who responded and especially to Island Market.
