Do we really need to reorganize our county again?
Every organizational structure has its strengths and potential weaknesses. We don’t need to gut the Charter system the voters approved in 2005 to make it work better.
The most important factor in our county’s success is not the organizational structure but whom we put in the positions. It’s the people who make it work — whatever the organizational structure is. We will soon have three new Council members and a new Administrator. Let’s give them an opportunity to make the current Charter model work better.

It is true, to a point, that it is the people in office who make government work … or not. By all accounts we have elected some pretty bright folks as Council members. It has been 3 years since the holdover Commissioners left. The Charter-elected Council members have had two solid years under the current system. If the system isn’t working very well, maybe it is the system and not the folks we elected that is the problem.
A six member Council, (that no other County in Washington State uses), combined with an Administrator who is largely accountable only to himself, is proving unwieldy and a poor government organization.
In addition, voters only have a choice in selecting one of the six Council representatives. A better and more representative process is when all the voters choose each elected position.
The three amendments suggested by the Charter Review Committee, that will appear on the November ballot, will create a new and improved Charter for San Juan County…
