My wife and I are enthusiastic supporters of candidate Kari McVeigh for San Juan County Council for District 1 (San Juan, Stuart, and other adjacent islands) and we will be voting for her on our November 5 ballots. Our support for her is based upon many factors, including Kari’s past successful management of several organizations with greater budgets, and far greater personnel numbers, than those of our San Juan County government. Her opponent has no such experience.

If you are a voter who has still not decided whether to vote for Kari or her opponent Stephanie O’Day, I suggest you consider the following facts, which are based upon publicly available data from Washington State’s Public Disclosure Commission and its Department of State. This data confirms that O’Day’s donors are heavily weighted toward the wealthy and individuals not registered to vote in San Juan County.
As of October 19, O’Day had received a total of $68,947 in campaign contributions from 96 donors, compared to only $29,870 received by Kari from 163 donors. Kari’s average contribution was $183, much lower than O’Day’s $718. This is because contributions of $1,000 and greater represented 82% of O’Day’s total contributions compared to only 38% for Kari. One ultra-wealthy couple, both Trump supporters, donated $4,800 to O’Day.
A high 45% of O’Day’s contributions were received from individuals not registered to vote in our county. Only 15% of Kari’s contributions come from these sources.
Draw your own conclusions from these figures, but they make me wonder why O’Day attracts so few small donations from our county’s residents, while relying to a much greater extent on wealthy donors, particularly those with primary residences elsewhere. And what her donors will receive in return.
Please vote for Kari McVeigh.
