— from Kyle Freeman, Orcas Middle School/High School Principal —
I want to congratulate the Orcas Island Booster Club, OIHS coaches and Orcas student athletes for the amazing work they did yesterday in raising money to help our league partners in Darrington. I also would like to thank the community of Orcas Island for coming out to show how one community can share their love with another.
In two hours yesterday our athletes and coaches raised over $5,000.00 from our community to support the Red Cross in Snohomish County. Donations are still being accepted at the Booster Club website.
Two jerseys are also being signed with personal messages and will be in the high school office until Friday when they will be delivered to the community of Darrington.
Your love and messages are making a difference to the students, families, and community.
Thank you for your amazing display of Viking Pride!

As I drove through Eastsound yesterday it took couple of street corners before I could have a good look and realize what all the students were doing. I got to a corner where I could stop and donate . Thanks to our students who did such a massive coverage as to offer the opportunity for a safe stop. I as many others [ I am sure ] thought about sending to the Snohomish Red Cross a donation but given the opportunity to do so on the spot made it happen. Great job kids. Cheers to all of you Velma
What an amazing gesture of compassion from our student athletes, the Boosters, and our community. Janet and I were pleased to donate! The need is great – please send dollars to help families deal with this tragedy.
Kyle, As a community we are blessed in so many ways, one of which is the blessing of these young students who during the sports seasons they and Darrington’s athletes are rivals but when the need presented itself during such a tragedy your, our, young people stepped up to lend a hand. They demonstrated grace, compassion and good character. We are so proud of them and of a generous community.
