In 2020, my husband and I were lucky enough to become full-time residents of East-est Orcas. In 2023 I was able to start volunteering at the Orcas Senior Center (OSC) and what I’ve learned is that OSC is a quiet untapped resource that now needs your support.
But first, did you know?
In the 90’s the OSC was to be a combination assisted living facility and senior activities center, but when fundraising efforts didn’t meet the goal, San Juan County stepped in to buy a portion of the building for use as County offices instead of residential rooms. It is now time for OSC to buy the building, having become an independent non-profit entity in 2023. The mission of the Center is to serve not only the older population of Orcas but the community as a whole. Events, classes, groups, and meetings welcome people of all ages and levels of ability. In April alone the OSC offered 103 different opportunities to gather, learn, laugh, and connect.
Learn more at www.orcasseniors.org or make tax-deductible donations through OICF at tinyurl.com/OSCBuildingFund.
I feel fortunate to be living well on Orcas, believe the Center will be an integral part of our future, and I hope you make it a part of yours.
