Letter to Editor | In support of Rick Hughes

I want to share why I’m supporting Rick Hughes for county council. In his past terms as our County Council representative, Rick has been a doer. As a member of the Exchange Board of Directors I am grateful for Rick’s help in the rebuilding of the Exchange.

When we started fundraising, the Library was fundraising for the new addition and the U of Dub wanted more than a million dollars to take over our health care clinic. The local wisdom was we needed health care and access to knowledge, more than a second hand store. Rick Hughes came up and engineered that the County would build a shell and ORS would finish it with donated labor and the funds we raised.

We are appreciative to Rick for pulling our building together. This is just one of the many things Rick Hughes has done for Orcas and the County. I’ll list the ones I can remember.

• Responsible for the Orcas Road and Mount Baker Rd improvements.
• The parking lot at the Ferry Landing and the waiting room.
• Called for the Deer Harbor community meeting the decide how the community wants to address the need for parking.
• Responsible for Upper Deer Harbor Road extension and the addition of 15 parking spaces on the five year road plan.
• Responsible for legislation allowing Deer Harbor residents to allow off-island parking for Waldron Island and others.
