This week, I had the pleasure of experiencing community engagement, up close on both Waldron and Lopez Islands.
Last Sunday, I visited the Waldron community and had several informative conversations. I heard their concerns about receiving county services on a remote island, along with basic infrastructure issues. I was able to share my priorities as a candidate for council, especially around the complex budget challenges our county is facing.
On Tuesday, I attended the county’s community meeting on Lopez Island about the proposed new facility at Odlin Park.
As I reflect on these gatherings, I am genuinely impressed by how many people took time out of their day to come together, share their perspectives, and listen to one another. It reminded me of what I love about living in this community: people care, and they’re willing to show up.
During election cycles, we talk a lot about the importance of voting. But civic engagement doesn’t end at the ballot box. Attending a community meeting, asking questions, and sharing your thoughts on decisions that affect our future are all meaningful ways to have a say.
I’m grateful to everyone who participated. Our community is stronger when we take the time to be involved.
