— from Sheriff Ron Krebs —
On Wednesday, September 5 at approximately 11:39 pm, a vehicle traveling in an unknown direction on Orcas Road at Nordstrom Lane left the roadway and struck a tree.
There were two occupants in the car. One was sent to Harborview Hospital in Seattle via Airlift Northwest and the other was sent to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham via Island Air. It is unknown the extent of the injuries or the cause of the accident at this time.
An investigation is being conducted into the cause and circumstances of the accident.

This is one of the most dangerous corners/intersections in the County. But not for much longer, thanks to the efforts of Rick Hughes and the rest of the County Council, who moved the improvements of this road section to top priority!
Now let’s take care of the rest of our main road: The dangerous narrow section between the Map Corner and the Golf Course; and Schaefer Stretch, between Nordstrom and Deer Harbor Road.
one of the occupants…a local…has passed away…this article needs a sensitive update
Why have we had to wait for four days for an update from the Sheriff’s office or other authorities regarding this tragic accident? Did one of the passengers actually die? Why the news lag? I agree with Fred Klein’s comment from yesterday.
Calls to the Sheriff’s office requesting further information have gone unanswered. The injured were island residents, and one of the passengers did not survive the accident. We will update as soon as we have an official response.
