From Dick Staub, Pastor, Orcas Island Community Church
WinterFest will soon be here — March 8-10. The theme this year is “My Spiritual Journey (So Far): Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis.”
Kindlings WinterFest is an annual lecture series featuring leading thinkers on issues of contemporary importance. It is a very scaled down, lecture-only version of KindlingsFest, our summer event.
The speaker at WinterFest is Lauren Winner, who holds a Ph.D. in history and is the author of numerous books, including Still: Notes on a Mid-Faith Crisis, Mudhouse Sabbath: An Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Discipline, Girl Meets God: A Memoir, Real Sex: The Naked Truth about Chastity.
She has appeared on PBS’s “Religion & Ethics Newsweekly” and has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture, and Christianity Today. Winner has degrees from Duke, Columbia, and Cambridge universities.
The former book editor for Beliefnet, Lauren teaches at Duke Divinity School, and lives in Durham, North Carolina. She travels extensively to lecture and teach. During the academic year of 2007-2008, she was a visiting fellow at the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University, and during the academic year of 2010-2011, she was a visiting fellow at the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University.
Winner was born to a Jewish father and a Southern Baptist mother, and was raised Jewish. When she’s home, you can usually find her curled up, on her couch or screen porch, with a good novel.
