We are creating a Genealogy Club at the Orcas Island Library to help people discover and research their roots through both through traditional public records utilizing library resources, as well as all kinds of traditional and unorthodox ways to find the information you need.
The Genealogy Club is free and open to anyone who is interested in exploring family genealogy-whether you have years of experience or just want to get started. Our meetings will be held monthly at the library and will include both a general presentation of interest and the opportunity for participants to share their research and questions.
Coordinators Vicki Leimback and Kathi Ciskowski are both passionate about research and will bring their organizational and genealogical skills and resources to share with other islanders who are delving into this fascinating hobby. The meetings will take place on the third Tuesday of the month (some breaks over the course of the year) with the first one happening on February 20 from 10:30-12:30 in the library meeting room. The second one will take place on Tuesday, March 20 also
from 10:30-12:30.
During this first meeting Kathi Ciskowski will offer a basic class on how to navigate Ancestry.com, free through the library system, and give tips on online genealogy etiquette and navigating through internet sites safely.
Kathi Ciskowski has a Certificate from the University of Washington Genealogy and Family History course and has taught and helped people with genealogy projects for eight years. Vicki Leimback has been doing extensive research on her family history and the history of houses. Both grew up in WA and now live on Orcas. Call Kathi at 360-376-4186 for more information.
