Preston Augustin Lang

Preston Augustin Lang was a sweet, loving, vivacious, curious, and oftentimes mischievous boy. Growing up on Orcas Island, Preston was surrounded by the trees and water that he loved so much. He was already becoming the quintessential island kid: at home in the outdoors, with an endless fascination for the natural world. Whether grasping for wild blackberries, picking flowers for Mama, avidly watching the birds in the sky, or searching for crabs under the rocks on the beach, Preston was always exploring.

On rainy days, Preston made his circuit at home chasing the cat, galloping around on his trusty rocking horse, and curling up on Mama’s lap for stories. Some of his favorite tales included Frog & Toad Are Friends, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Peter Pan. After a day of adventures, he found comfort against Baba’s chest, listening to the rhythm of his heartbeat and the melody of his singing as he drifted off to sleep.

Preston had the most beaming smile and contagious laugh, capable of banishing grey clouds from even the stormiest sky. And that’s saying something in the Pacific Northwest. If you were lucky enough to earn his trust, he made you feel indescribably special. From his little friends at daycare to the familiar faces he greeted on walks around Deer Harbor and the many hearts he stole at community gatherings throughout Orcas Island, Preston brought a ray of sunshine wherever he went. Words cannot capture the happiness he left everywhere in his wake.

As Preston’s parents, we will miss his sleepy-time cuddles, his exuberant first smile of the morning, the feel of his little hands in ours, his soft, wispy hair, and his warm, loving hugs. We weep for the dreams never realized. Our perfect little boy left this world much too soon, taking a piece of our hearts with him. We are forever grateful and honored to have known the joy of being his parents. Preston taught us humility, patience, and wonderment, but above all, the meaning of unconditional love. He was cherished and adored, and will be missed beyond measure.
