It is with profound sadness that David Shinstrom announces the death of his beloved constant companion, Paqo.
Hundreds of Orcas residents got to know Paqo in his integral role of greeter and comforter at Orcas Family Health Center. Countless patients commented on how Paqo’s presence was so valuable to their experience.
Paqo first came to Orcas at 10 weeks of age from a cockapoo breeder in Texas. He was incredibly loyal in his role at OFHC, on numerous hikes through Moran State Park and as a valuable copilot.
He is sorely missed. Donations can be made in Paqo’s name to the Orcas Animal Shelter.
He was a wonderful greeter at the clinic in the good old days

I am not a dog person, but I often found myself thinking “if I had a dog, I’d want one just like Paqo.” Many of us are saddened by your (and our) loss, David. I have no doubt he is aware of how much he was loved.
Oh, Paqo . . . I remember how you greeted me 16 years ago, as I limped into the clinic on a fractured fibula. And greeted me many times since then. I tried to express my appreciation by assuring you that “you are a GOOD dog, Paqo!” We miss you, little friend, and remember you as a GREAT dog!
Dog Is My Co-Pilot!
Mahalo Nui Loa & Aloha sweet Paqo. He sure made my many clinic visits more pleasant. Loved the way Paqo would slowly nudge open the door to each exam room, letting himself in for a pet and snuggle as he made his “rounds”. If only every health clinic (hint hint IPC) and hospital allowed a furry greeter such as Paqo. I’d gladly take a few wisps of fuzzy doggy hair vs people germs any day. May all of the beloved animals of Paqo’s patients welcome him to their warm sunny meadow in the clouds.
He is, and will be, missed.
I worked side by side with Paqo at OFHC. He was no push over and he could be stinky. However, he was also a tremendous comfort, an unwavering support, an inspiration for continuing education, and a loyal and steadfast friend to the OFHC patients, staff, and leader Dr. Dave. Patients shared with me so many touching yet baffling moments of their encounters with Paqo. He would compassionately scratch on an exam room door, intentionally asking to be let in, to quietly sit next to those who were sick, scared, in pain, and unsure of what to do next. He was there as witness and silent spokesperson advocating for those who came to OFHC and to the providers there for answers, solace, and comfort.
