The historic ferry Elwha, a staple of Washington State Ferries since 1968, has been sold to Everett Ship Repair for $100,000.
The ferry will be repurposed into a floating office and warehouse space at the shipyard, the Washington State Department of Transportation said in a press release.
A tugboat from Western Towboat Co., provided by the new owner, was set to arrive at the Bainbridge Island terminal Thursday morning to begin the relocation process.
The public can track the tugboat Mariner’s progress in real-time via MarineTraffic.
“The Elwha has been part of Washington State Ferry history since 1968, and we’re excited to see one of our ferries with so much history and memories for millions of passengers is being repurposed locally,” said Steve Nevey, Washington State Ferries’ Assistant Secretary. “It won’t be the Elwha we’ve all come to know and appreciate but I’m confident it’s in good hands with a local shipyard.”
The 144-car Elwha was one of four Super-class ferries built in the mid-1960s and primarily served the Anacortes/Friday Harbor/Sidney, British Columbia route before its retirement in April 2020.
Two other Super-class ferries, Kaleetan and Yakima, remain in service.
