In 2025, 40% of island households (1,160 households) relied on the Orcas Island Food Bank to help meet their nutritional needs, freeing up money for other necessities, such as gas, heating fuel, medical care, and housing. As seasonal work winds down for the winter, even more neighbors turn to us. Our volunteers help make that possible, ensuring every donor dollar goes where it has the greatest impact: putting food on our neighbors’ tables.
Each week, 40 to 50 volunteers typically put in a 2-hour shift to help our staff with food storage, packaging, and distribution. (Many of our volunteers are also customers.) There’s work to fit every ability and interest, from hefting 50-pound cartons of produce to bagging mushrooms, stocking shelves, and translating between English and Spanish.
In addition to feeling good about helping our community thrive, volunteering at the
Food Bank can bring other benefits:
- Make new friends.
- Learn new skills.
- Log volunteer hours to help meet new eligibility requirements for SNAP and Washington Apple Health insurance.
