It’s that time of year again—not just the holiday season, but also the opening of applications for the Orcas Aviation Association (OAA) annual Adult Private Pilot Scholarship!

Each year, OAA offers two scholarships that help aspiring pilots realize the wonder and freedom that comes with obtaining their Private Pilot certificate. These scholarships are awarded to full-time residents of Orcas Island based on three criteria:

  • A passion for flying and a willingness to commit to the program
  • A willingness to give back to the community
  • Financial need.

Last year’s recipients—Mindy Nuñez, Kellen Comroy, and Indy Zoeller—have successfully completed their training and flight requirements, passed their FAA exams, and are now active private pilots here on Orcas Island! Additionally, Bethany Carter, a 2022 Youth Scholarship recipient, is on the verge of earning her Instrument Rating.

The Orcas aviation community is unparalleled, and the San Juan Islands provide a stunning backdrop for flying. OAA not only funds two adult scholarships but also manages the Mercy Flight program. The Airhawks Flying Club offers youth scholarships, rental planes, flight training, and mentoring.

If you or someone you know has always dreamed of flying, please share this opportunity!

  • Applications are due by December 7th, with interviews taking place later in December. Scholarships will be awarded on January 1st.
  • The OAA scholarship is a matching funds scholarship – OAA matches the investment by the student.
  • Airhawks is planning ground school to start in January for OAA and Airhawks candidates with flying to get started as soon as the weather breaks in May/June.

You can find the application https://airhawks.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/OAA-scholarship-application.pdf It’s quick and straightforward.
