DVSAS Board President

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services held its annual board retreat over the weekend.  We traced the rich history of the agency and began critical work on the future development of DVSAS.  The day was as inspiring as it was educational.  Executive Director Anita Castle and our facilitator Leslie Rae conspired to create an imaginative, captivating design for the day.  It was a huge success.  (Many thanks to board member Karla Horwitz for hosting us in her beautiful home.)

Our board has grown recently to 11 members, each of whom is deeply committed to preventing family violence and sexual assaults here in the San Juans.  From safety planning to emergency services, from individual therapy to liaison with law enforcement — the Sheriff’s lead detective, Brent Johnson, has been an active, key member of the board for years — DVSAS is poised to provide even better protection and service in the future.

Speaking of the future, at 7:30 this Saturday night the Orcas Center is putting on a “LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends” concert, with a major portion of the proceeds benefitting DVSAS.  If you’ve not heard Mr. Bell and his “only friends,” you’re in for a real treat (Google them, if you have any doubt).  Following the concert, the rock-blues- funk trio will be on hand for a reception in the Madrona Room.  Finger foods and open bar provided.  Mr. Bell, also committed to the cause of ending violence in family and other intimate relationships, has agreed to offer a few remarks.

Our goal, naturally, is to fill every seat.  Do yourself a favor, and come on out.  You’ll have a ball, and for a good cause.
