So Grateful

We could not have had a better day to celebrate the GiveOrcas campaign with an Ice Cream Social at Cascade Lake. Cones, bowls, and rootbeer floats were enjoyed, grant checks were distributed and the Youth Philanthropy Awards were revealed.

Each year, the High School Senior Class is given the opportunity to distribute $10,000 to organizations they select by identifying their own values, reviewing needs, and working together to prioritize options. This year, they made six awards recognizing Mercy Flights ($3000), the Booster Club ($2000), Island Reproductive Health Initiative ($1500),Orcas Animal Protection Society ($1500), the Friends of the Library ($1000), and SAFE San Juans ($1000). Each student presenter explained why the organization was selected and how their work impacts the lives of the students and their families. It was a lovely presentation.

We also celebrated the efforts of Ed Andrews, who championed the GiveOrcas campaigns this past year with great success. Ed has decided to move on from OICF. He will be missed and we wish him the best in his next chapter.

Thank you to all who threw their hats in the ring last week during the filing period for various public service positions in San Juan County. A few seats remain in need of candidates, so SJCo is holding a special filing period June 7-9 to encourage additional candidates to file. You can read more about it here

The American Legion will be holding a ceremony to mark Memorial Day, Monday at 11 at the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Hoping you have a lovely weekend.
