Please join the San Juan county Master Gardeners to learn from Abby Hyde of Satinflower Native Nurseries in coastal British Columbia.  Abby will speak about gardening with native plants to restore our degraded ecosystems and mitigate the effects of climate change by increasing biodiversity..

Why does it make sense to grow natives? Where do we start? What steps can we take to lend a helping hand to our interconnected community of native flora and fauna which make our region so unique?

Resilient and diverse, waterwise and genetically adapted, our native species sustain local pollinators, butterflies and birds for balanced, heathy ecosystems.

Successfully growing natives depends on having a good understanding of the conditions they need in order to thrive in our sub-Mediterranean climate in the rain shadow of the Olympics, characterized by arid summers. Abby draws upon her experience in propagating native plants for various ecosystems ranging from coastal Douglas fir, forest and woodland to Garry oak and shoreline, to show that natives work exceedingly well in a variety of settings.

Abby discovered her passion for native species and restoring degraded ecosystems while growing up in Bali, Indonesia. She made the long move from Indonesia to Victoria to pursue a BSc in Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria. Abby has been with Satinflower Nurseries since 2021 and has worked in a variety of roles. She is now a supervisor at Satinflower, leading residential consults and doing workshops and public outreach related to native plants and restoration.  During her free time, Abby is an iNaturalist enthusiast and is eager to photograph and document biodiversity and contribute to conservation efforts.

As we look for strategies to deal with climate change, could our biodiverse natives increasingly take on a leading role in our climate-friendly garden of the future?  Abby will share her knowledge and ideas about these questions.
