c010bb081ab3e9a6f090c7156a125c18[1]Orcas Island Garden Club meeting, May 18, 2016, 10 a.m., in the Madrona Room of Orcas Center, presents Linda Gilkeson from neighboring Salt Spring Island. Linda will share high productivity, low maintenance methods for our organic gardens, from feeding the soil to year round planting schedules. Also included in the presentation will be discussions of our regional climate change and what it means for the productivity of our fruits, vegetables and other plants.

We will learn how to design a resilient food garden, prevent common draught and heat stress disorders and improve conditions so plants survive “weird weather,” including heat, cold, draught and storms. Linda holds a Ph.D in Entomology and is the author of several books, including  “Year-Around Harvest”; “Winter Gardening on the Coast; West Coast Gardening; and, “The Complete Guide to Year-Round Organic Gardening in the Pacific Northwest.” Linda is a regular instructor in the Master Gardeners programs in British Columbia and is busy year round giving workshops on pest management and organic gardening.
