North Short Preserve (located near the northwest corner of Orcas Island)

Spend your Valentine’s Day exploring one of the most recent Land Bank’s preserves while showing your love for our local birds!

Join us on Friday, February 14th at 9 am for a walk through the North Shore Preserve with Orcas Island preserve steward, Peter Guillozet. We will share an overview of recent native plantings and restoration efforts while we simultaneously participate in a group bird count.

Prepare for the weather and wear practical shoes

Expect this activity to last approximately 1 1/2 hours with plenty of time for questions while we appreciate and look for birds we come across during our walk.

The San Juan County Conservation Land Bank has the privilege, and the responsibility, to own and care for a network of 39 preserves encompassing almost 5,000 acres of land for wildlife habitat, farming, and for recreation and well-being.

The North Shore Preserve is a very recent addition to the Land Bank properties, located near the northwest corner of Orcas Island. The 58-acre preserve offers forested uplands, wetlands and over 1,800 feet of natural shoreline with prime nearshore habitat for juvenile salmon and the forage fish critical to salmon recovery.

The February Big Backyard Bird Count is a global citizen science event when people from all over the world come together for the love of birds.

Watch the video to learn more about the count.
