Orcas Relay for Life – Local teams raise funds, awareness and hope as they continuously walk the track at the high school athletic field in relay teams. Open to all, by donation. Opening ceremonies at 7 p.m., relay through the night until 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Adult Prom, “The Prom You Never had” will be a swinging, dancing good time and it’s a benefit for John Baker too. 8 p.m. at the Discovery House, Rosario. Dance the night away to the big band sounds of Orcatrazz with Classic Vocalist Beth Baker and in the process, do something nice for an Island friend.  John Baker needs our help.  Tickets are $20 per person and are available at Darvill’s, Ray’s, Ace Hardware, Orcas Store and Gordeaux’s.  Admission includes a complimentary dessert and beverage. Portland Taiko This spectacle will pound the house! Taiko is the Japanese word for drum, and this art form melds traditional and contemporary rhythms, melody, humor, storytelling and movement into a dynamic performance. 7:30 p.m. at Orcas Center. Writers Rountable: The Triggering Town 1 to 3 p.m. at the Library. What will trigger your writing? The subject of this month’s Writers Roundtable owes its title to a  book by Richard Hugo by the same name, a book of “Lectures and Essays on Poetry and Writing.” July’s Roundtable will present “triggers” in the form of poems, short short stories, excerpts from stories, novels, memoir, non-fiction, images — that is, whatever we choose to bring to the table to share with others.All are welcome. Participants are asked to bring some writing to share, as well as some of their own work in progress to share if desired.

Orcas Family Connections hosts Family Dance from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Odd Fellow’s Hall. Costumes welcome, admission by donation. For all ages.

Bands Princeton and Blue Tarp play in a benefit for the Funhouse. 8:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall.  Princeton, a Los Angeles-based countrified indie rock band, and Orcas’ own Blue Tarp turn their amps to eleven and launch an all-ages benefit show for The Funhouse.  Tickets are $8 for students and $10 for adults the day of the show. Advance tickets are available at The Funhouse or Darvill’s for $6/$8. Call 376-7177 for more information.
