Free farm and ranch succession workshop offered Oct. 29 in Friday Harbor

Farmers, ranchers and agricultural landowners thinking about the future of their land or business are invited to Planning for the Future of Your Farm and Ranch: Land and Business Transfer Workshop, a free workshop on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brickworks in Friday Harbor.

Presented by American Farmland Trust in partnership with the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild and WSU San Juan County Extension, the workshop will offer practical information and resources for navigating farm and ranch succession, land transfer and business transition.

Planning for what happens to a farm or ranch over time can involve some big questions: Who will take over the business or care for the land? How do families begin conversations about succession? What legal considerations should be addressed? And where can landowners and producers turn for help?

Through a panel and small-group roundtable discussions, participants will hear from professional advisors, ask questions, explore different approaches and identify next steps toward a transition plan for their land and business.

Featured advisors include:

• Dylan LeValley, attorney with Adams & Duncan Lawyers
• Jack Hebner and Gayle Cooper, Fulcrum Institute Dispute Resolution Center
• Elizabeth Bragg, land transfer specialist with American Farmland Trust’s Pacific Northwest team

The workshop is intended for farmers and ranchers at all stages of their careers, including producers considering retirement or a future transfer, as well as agricultural landowners interested in planning for the long-term future of their property.

The workshop is free, and lunch will be provided. Farmers, ranchers, producers and agricultural landowners who attend are eligible to receive a $75 gift card in recognition of their time.
