The encore screening of the National Theatre’s stage play “Frankenstein” comes to Orcas Center Friday, June 8 at 7:30 pm.
Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale. Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.
This new play by Nick Dear is based on the novel by Mary Shelley. Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”) returned to the theatre to direct this visionary production with Benedict Cumberbatch (“War Horse,” “Atonement,” “Star Trek,”) and Jonny Lee Miller (“Trainspotting,” “Hackers,” “Sherlock”). Both stars were nominated together for an Olivier Award, Best Actor in a Play, a shared nomination. Both actors alternate in the roles of Dr. Frankenstein and his creation, the monster Creature.
The 16-week run of the production at the National Theatre was entirely sold out. and performances played to over 100,000 people in cinemas worldwide. The feedback was unprecedented. The reviews are all raves.
“They’re both terrific…. it’s a theatrical coup. This taut, thrilling play runs with hardly a moment for breath.” The Times
“A thrill. The most viscerally exciting and stunning show in town. Boyle pulls off something truly spectacular here.” Daily Telegraph

An interesting bit of history is that Mary Shelley was only 19 when she finished the novel and 20 when it was published.
